Hear the sounds of 19th century Brazilian Choro and beyond! This program will blend the sounds of Latin Jazz, traditional New Orleans jazz influences and the music of Brazil with a bi-hemispheric lineup of jazz masters.
This free afternoon performance will offer sounds from the 19th and early 20th century Brazilian classical and traditional folk music in an intimate and improvisational setting, featuring André Mehmari on accordion, Candice Hoyes on voice, Hans Glawischnig on bass, and Chris Washburne on trombone playing the music of Villa Lobos, Nazareth, and music from the great choro tradition.

Chris Washburne is one of those rare musicians whose musical activities cross many styles and cultural borders. From early in his career he refused to be pigeon-holed as just being a jazz or classical player, but instead has continually pursued a diverse path. He received his Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology at Columbia University, is currently Associate Professor of Music and Found Director of the Louis Armstrong Jazz Performance Program at Columbia University and has published numerous articles on jazz, Latin jazz, and salsa.
André Mehmari is considered one of the most talented young musicians of his native Brazil. His activities as pianist, composer, arranger and instrumentalist are highly regarded both in popular and classical music. As his compositions and arrangements have been performed by important Brazilian orchestras and his music has also attained wide attention as he has gained wide recognition for his music in jazz festivals and concerts.
With a voice that Jazziz Magazine calls “bluesy yet sublime,” Candice Hoyes sings with commanding presence. She has performed and toured with Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and has been a featured vocalist with Marc Cary’s The Harlem Sessions, Wycliffe Gordon & Friends, and Ulysses Owens Jr. Quintet. A classically-trained vocalist, Hoyes has performed in six languages, and has performed as soloist at international festivals as well as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. In the summer of 2016, she will appear with The Harlem Sessions at New York SummerStage and JazzFest Wiesen in Austria, with the legendary hiphop/soul band The Roots, as headliner.
Hans Glawischnig is one of the most in-demand and versatile bassists on the New York music scene. His sideman activities include performances and recordings with Chick Corea, James Moody, Rave Coltrane, Miguel Zenon, David Sanchez, Kenny Werner, Billy Childs, Ray Barretto, Manhattan Transferand the Mingus Big Band, to name a few. He is featured on over 100 recordings and is an accomplished composer as well , having released three critically acclaimed CDs of his own music, Common Ground, Panorama and Jahira.
