SIEGFRIED, ACT III of Wagner's Ring Cycle

  • Main Sanctuary of Christ Church 254 East Putnam Avenue Greenwich, CT 06830 United States (map)

23Arts is proud to present Greek-American tenor Philip Modinos in the title role of a semi-staged concert of Wagner's Siegfried Act 3. Leading the project is Music-Director/pianist Ben Woodward of London's Fulham Opera, who delivered 23Arts' Short Introduction to Wagner's Ring Cycle lecture this summer at the Mountain Top Library.

Two-thirds through Wagner's 15-hour Ring Cycle, Siegfried, son of the twins Siegmund and Sieglinde, finds himself having a huge argument with his grandfather, the wandering Wotan. Siegfried defies Wotan and, having never been taught the concept of fear, hurtles up to a high mountainous place surrounded by fire. He leaps through the fire and encounters Brünnhilde, the Valkyrie goddess who has been imprisoned there. The two immediately realise a connection and fall wildly in love in some of the most extraordinarily joyous music Wagner ever wrote.

Philip Modinos has sang roles including Don Jose (Carmen), Pinkerton and Yamadori (Madama Butterfly), Lensky (Onegin), Alfredo (La traviata), Radames (Aida) and the title role in Otello. In 2013 and 2014 he was the highly acclaimed Siegfried in Fulham Opera's extraordinary intimate Ring Cycle, led by Ben Woodward.

Modinos and Woodward will be joined by Mechelle Tippets as Brünnhilde, Elizabeth Russo as Erda and Steven Fredericks as The Wanderer.

7.30pm, Main Sanctuary of Christ Church, 254 East Putnam Ave, Greenwich, CT 06830.
